Will Class 4 shingles actually save you money?
Class 4 is the top rating in the UL 2218 impact test — a shingle that survives a two-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking. In hail country, many insurers reward that resilience with a premium discount. The pitch sounds great, but the real question is whether the yearly savings ever pay back the higher install cost.
The payback math
Class 4 shingles typically add roughly $1–$2 per square foot — about $2,000–$4,000 on an average roof. Against that, insurers commonly knock 10–30% off the wind-and-hail portion of your premium. On a $2,400 annual policy where roughly half the premium is wind/hail, a 20% discount is around $240 a year. At that rate a $3,000 upgrade pays for itself in roughly 12–13 years — comfortably inside the shingle's lifespan, and faster if your hail risk (and discount) is higher.
- High-hail states (TX, CO, OK, KS, NE): discounts are largest and payback is quickest — often under 10 years.
- Moderate-hail states: the discount exists but is smaller; payback stretches toward the shingle's mid-life.
- Low-hail states: many insurers offer little or no discount, so you're paying mainly for durability, not savings.
Beyond the discount
The premium credit is only part of the value. A Class 4 roof is far less likely to need a claim after a hailstorm — which keeps your claims history clean and avoids the deductible and rate bumps that follow a replacement. It also tends to hold up longer overall and can be a selling point at resale.
How to claim the discount
- Confirm with your insurer that they offer an impact-resistant credit and how much it is.
- Choose a UL 2218 Class 4 product and keep the manufacturer's certification.
- Send the certificate and the installer's invoice to your insurer to apply the credit.
Call your agent before you sign anything — the discount only makes sense if your carrier actually offers it in your state. If they do, and you live anywhere hail is a regular visitor, Class 4 is usually an easy yes.
