California climate

Why California roofing is different

California roofs face specific climate stressors — varied — Mediterranean to alpine conditions plus wildfire ember intrusion and earthquake-induced cracking — that demand different specs than the state next door. Your assigned roofing contractor calibrates material, ventilation, and underlayment to local code and weather load.

California climate metrics affecting roof design
Metric California average Implication for your roof
Average annual snowfall 5″ Minimal snow load; standard synthetic underlayment is sufficient.
Average annual rainfall 22″ Standard drip-edge + sealed valleys per IRC R905.
Hail risk low Standard architectural shingle systems perform well across California.
Hurricane / coastal wind No Standard wind-rated shingles (110 mph) cover inland conditions.

"Gabriel and his crew were fast, efficient, and did great work! They removed our old roof and gutters and replaced with a new roof and gutters. This part of our home project went very smooth. Take a look at the before, during, and after photos. Thank you!"

"I had a leak around my skylight so I called the Roofing Pros and I’m glad I did. Gabriel was at my house within the hour on my roof in the rain. He told me what it would cost for him and his guys to fix the leak but out of the goodness of his heart, he decided he would tell me how to fix it to save me some money. The next day I patched the roof and fixed the leak. I’ll need a new roof within the year and I will definitely be calling the Roofing Pros to do the work. Five stars."

"Last year, after many years of living with a dilapidated wood shake roof, I decided that I was tired of buckets in my attic and stress every rainy season. I began getting estimates from various roofers. The time had come, especially considering the nightmare rain we were enduring. When I called Roof Pros, Gabriel surprised me by advising me to wait, telling me that the price of materials was particularly high at that time, and that prices would drop in a while. That stuck with me. I ended up not being able to get the job going until this year, but this time I didn’t bother calling the others. I knew to call Gabriel back, on a Friday, and not only did he remember our conversation from last year(!), but he let me know that they could start the FOLLOWING MONDAY. I was shocked, because all the other roofers said they could get to me in about six weeks. He came to my house that afternoon, and we spent about an hour going over the process and breaking down the estimate. I understood where every dollar was going, and his price was fair. You know that feeling you get when you take your car in to the mechanics, or to any specialist, and they’re kind of smug with you because they know more than you, and you’re the vulnerable one? I never felt that way with Gabriel. He was down to earth, honest, polite and was totally professional and transparent about the estimate. You won’t feel intimidated talking with him. His crew arrived early in the morning, and by the time I got off work in the early afternoon, my old roof was gone, and the plywood was already up. The next day, the inspector came to ok everything, and then on the third day they put up the shingles. By that third day, when I got off from work around 2 pm, the roof was done. And as the picture shows, it was beautiful. Take a look at the wretched state of my old shake roof. And then look at the drastic difference my new roof makes. And this year, I’ll be able to enjoy the rain. If you’re ready for a new roof, call Roof Pros. If you’re ready, they’re ready."

"I saw a Roof Maxx commercial saying I could extend the life of my roof so I called and set an appointment for them to come out to see if my roof qualifies for the treatment. Joe from Roof Maxx came to do the assessment. He was very informative and knowledgeable of roofs. I'm happy to say their offer was very affordable and I can't wait to rejuvenate my roof. Thanks Joe for giving me a great deal."

"Their guy Arnie came out and quoted me $7000 for a FULL REPLACEMENT of a flat section of roof that covers roughly 800 sq ft. He assured me they would completely tear off my existing tpo membrane on the roof and check for and repair any wood rot and check the substrate for damage as well and then after repairs and proper preparation bring a truck out and spray a commercial grade silicone on to give me a silicone membrane roof. I had to finance this work so after terms were agreed upon they received full payment of $7000 through said financing that they offer. Arnie being my contact point assured me the whole time that everything was a go and as planned. That was until the technician who actually does the work (Brian) showed up to start work with just one other guy and told me there was no way they could do a full replacement and that he had told Arnie about the situation. Arnie had never contacted me to tell me of any change of plans or to let me know what options I had. When I finally got Arnie on the phone to ask why I'm not getting the work I paid for, he tells me to let Brian do what he needs to do and he will get with the bosses in the office to discuss what work was actually done then get back to me with a possible resolution. Of course since they already got their full payment because I had to finance it I never heard back from Arnie on any kind of possible credit back or resolution. The scope of work their two guys did consisted of cutting my existing tpo lining around the perimeter on one side, adding some fabric and tar and fastened it down better. They then rolled a bucket of roofing silicone over my existing tpo roof lining. The work they actually did was just a repair and not what I was quoted and paid for. They never checked for any wood rot nor did they repair any wood at all. Not nearly $7000 worth of work/labor. They also did the silicone coating as we were dealing with the tule fog here in the central valley so I could see spots days afterwards where the silicone didn't cure properly because the weather and dew point are supposed to be within certain parameters (which they weren't) in order for the silicone to cure properly. You would think a professional roofing company would be aware of these things smh. They didn't even give me an invoice or receipt for the work that they actually did. Just sucks that businesses take advantage of people when they know they're in a desperate situation like having a roof leak. If the job was too small and they wouldn't make enough money on it they should've been honest with me and I would have went with a different company. I've reached out over the phone multiple times in an attempt to give the two owners Oscar and Fred the opportunity to make things right but their receptionist always has a good reason ready as to why they can't come to the phone or return my calls. Real stand up guys 👎🏻 I would avoid this place at all costs unless you want to be out a lot of money and not get what you paid for. I'd give zero stars if I could!"

Our California vetting methodology

Before any contractor joins our California network we pull and verify:

  1. 01 We pull the contractor's active California state or municipal roofing license and verify it against the issuing board's online registry.
  2. 02 We require a general liability certificate showing $1,000,000+ per-occurrence coverage.
  3. 03 We require a workers compensation certificate for California and every other state the contractor operates in.
  4. 04 We confirm at least one active manufacturer certification — GAF Master Elite, CertainTeed ShingleMaster, or Owens Corning Platinum Preferred.
  5. 05 We pull the BBB profile (minimum rating A-).
  6. 06 We audit public review profiles — Google, BBB, and Angi — for ≥ 4.5★ across ≥ 25 reviews.
  7. 07 Our regional ops manager conducts an in-person California crew interview before the contractor takes any leads.

Our regional ops team re-verifies every contractor's documentation every 12 months. We remove any contractor who fails re-verification from the network within 30 days. Network contractors are independent businesses, not employees of RoofPros USA.

Roofing FAQ for California homeowners

What is the 25% rule for roofing in California?

If more than 25% of your shingles show storm damage, granule loss, lifting, or curling, full replacement usually beats patch repair on lifecycle cost. California insurance carriers also use this threshold — once 25% of a roof slope is damaged by a covered peril, most policies pay to replace the entire slope rather than repair it. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) treats 25% as the standard repair-vs-replace inflection point.

What's the average cost of a new roof in California?

For a typical 2,000 sq ft (≈22-square) California home with architectural shingle, plan on $11,400 including tear-off, decking inspection, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, and a manufacturer-registered warranty. Standing-seam metal runs roughly 2–3× that figure but lasts 40–70 years. Repair-only jobs run $380–$1,800 with $1,100 the average roofing-repair-project spend.

How do I tell if a California roofer is dishonest?

Five red flags every California homeowner should watch for: (1) door-knockers showing up after a storm with no local address, (2) demands for full payment upfront — standard deposit is 25–30% with the balance due after final inspection, (3) no written, itemized estimate with named materials and brand, (4) verbal "guarantee" instead of a written manufacturer + workmanship warranty, and (5) no proof of $1M+ general liability insurance and workers compensation. Always verify the contractor in your state's online registry and the BBB before signing.

What is the cheapest time of year to get a new roof in California?

Late winter through early spring (typically February–April) is the cheapest time to schedule a California roof replacement. Demand is lowest, crews have open calendars, and contractors often discount 5–15%. Avoid the August–October peak when storm-damage claims spike. Emergency repairs are available year-round.

Do I need a licensed roofer in California?

California requires a C-39 Roofing Contractor license from the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) with bond and insurance.

What roof material works best in California?

Given California's varied — Mediterranean to alpine climate, the most popular choices are Class A fire-rated shingle, concrete tile, standing-seam metal. Local building practices, hail and wind risk, and snow load all factor in — your assigned local roofing contractor recommends the right system after a free inspection.

What's the most common roof problem in California?

wildfire ember intrusion is the leading roof issue in California, followed by earthquake-induced cracking and UV degradation.

How long does it take to get a quote in California?

Most California homeowners get a written, itemized quote within one business hour of submitting our online form. Your assigned roofing professional schedules an in-home inspection within 2–3 business days, and active leaks get same-day emergency tarping in major metros.
