Hawaii climate

Why Hawaii roofing is different

Hawaii roofs face specific climate stressors — tropical conditions plus salt-air corrosion and tropical wind — that demand different specs than the state next door. Your assigned roofing contractor calibrates material, ventilation, and underlayment to local code and weather load.

Hawaii climate metrics affecting roof design
Metric Hawaii average Implication for your roof
Average annual snowfall 0″ Minimal snow load; standard synthetic underlayment is sufficient.
Average annual rainfall 50″ Drip-edge + valley flashing critical; gutter sizing should match high-volume runoff.
Hail risk low Standard architectural shingle systems perform well across Hawaii.
Hurricane / coastal wind Yes — coastal counties 130 mph wind-rated shingles + ring-shank nails for FORTIFIED Roof eligibility.

"Jessie and his team did such an incredible job on providing me with a brand new roof for my first home purchase. The job went so smooth and quick. In addition to changing out some rotten wood/fascia, extended one side of my roof and including custom gutters. The entire package for an amazing price. And if there were any questions or concerns, Jessie and his team was on it fast. I have been blessed to hire them and I highly recommend to anyone requiring their services…Huge Mahaloz"

"Needed to find a roofer to resolve a granular loss of our flat garage roof to satisfy our insurance company. I Googled, read reviews and after 2 dead ends with "no follow through" other roofing companies I contacted R&C roofing. I called the office and a helpful woman took a message and said she would have someone contact me. Chris contacted me after I sent a chat online about the urgency of my need (the insurance company said they would cancel our policy if we didn't take care of the issue by a certain date). I explained the situation to Chris and he agreed to come that afternoon to check our garage roof, for which I was grateful because he sounded like a busy man. It didn't take him long for the assessment, and a few hours later he emailed 2 proposals. One for modified bitumen (same as old roofing) and one for silicone coating. The insurance company was very vague on how they wanted the granular loss resolved, even when asked directly. So we went with the silicone coating. The silicone option cost a little less than the other. Chris also explained that they don't do any color other than white because adding color to the silicone reduces its life and it may bubble up easier than plain white. We paid a 50 percent deposit and after some communication issues Chris finally got ahold of me to set an appointment for the next day. He also mentioned we did not have to do anything to prep the roof for their work other than moving our cars and anything else around that we don't want to get dirty when they power wash the garage. The next morning 2 young men showed up at the agreed time and made quick work of our 2 car garage roof. After power washing and priming and letting the primer dry. They put on the silicone coating. All their work took about half a day. They did the finishing touches just after lunch time and they were done. These workers were very respectful and professional and knew what they were doing. That afternoon it rained and the silicone did its job as expected. I took before and after photos and I must say, the white silicone looks really good. The rain water just rolls off of it. I sent photos of the roof to the insurance company and they were satisfied with the work. Thank you R&C Roofing for the great work and getting back to me when other roofing companies let us down (not gonna call anyone out, even though you want to know)."

Our Hawaii vetting methodology

Before any contractor joins our Hawaii network we pull and verify:

  1. 01 We pull the contractor's active Hawaii state or municipal roofing license and verify it against the issuing board's online registry.
  2. 02 We require a general liability certificate showing $1,000,000+ per-occurrence coverage.
  3. 03 We require a workers compensation certificate for Hawaii and every other state the contractor operates in.
  4. 04 We confirm at least one active manufacturer certification — GAF Master Elite, CertainTeed ShingleMaster, or Owens Corning Platinum Preferred.
  5. 05 We pull the BBB profile (minimum rating A-).
  6. 06 We audit public review profiles — Google, BBB, and Angi — for ≥ 4.5★ across ≥ 25 reviews.
  7. 07 Our regional ops manager conducts an in-person Hawaii crew interview before the contractor takes any leads.

Our regional ops team re-verifies every contractor's documentation every 12 months. We remove any contractor who fails re-verification from the network within 30 days. Network contractors are independent businesses, not employees of RoofPros USA.

Roofing FAQ for Hawaii homeowners

What is the 25% rule for roofing in Hawaii?

If more than 25% of your shingles show storm damage, granule loss, lifting, or curling, full replacement usually beats patch repair on lifecycle cost. Hawaii insurance carriers also use this threshold — once 25% of a roof slope is damaged by a covered peril, most policies pay to replace the entire slope rather than repair it. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) treats 25% as the standard repair-vs-replace inflection point.

What's the average cost of a new roof in Hawaii?

For a typical 2,000 sq ft (≈22-square) Hawaii home with architectural shingle, plan on $14,200 including tear-off, decking inspection, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, and a manufacturer-registered warranty. Standing-seam metal runs roughly 2–3× that figure but lasts 40–70 years. Repair-only jobs run $380–$1,800 with $1,100 the average roofing-repair-project spend.

How do I tell if a Hawaii roofer is dishonest?

Five red flags every Hawaii homeowner should watch for: (1) door-knockers showing up after a storm with no local address, (2) demands for full payment upfront — standard deposit is 25–30% with the balance due after final inspection, (3) no written, itemized estimate with named materials and brand, (4) verbal "guarantee" instead of a written manufacturer + workmanship warranty, and (5) no proof of $1M+ general liability insurance and workers compensation. Always verify the contractor in your state's online registry and the BBB before signing.

What is the cheapest time of year to get a new roof in Hawaii?

Late winter through early spring (typically February–April) is the cheapest time to schedule a Hawaii roof replacement. Demand is lowest, crews have open calendars, and contractors often discount 5–15%. Avoid the August–October peak when storm-damage claims spike. Emergency repairs are available year-round.

Do I need a licensed roofer in Hawaii?

Hawaii requires a C-42 Roofing and Waterproofing Contractor license from the Contractors License Board.

What roof material works best in Hawaii?

Given Hawaii's tropical climate, the most popular choices are standing-seam metal, concrete tile, asphalt shingle. Local building practices, hail and wind risk, and snow load all factor in — your assigned local roofing contractor recommends the right system after a free inspection.

What's the most common roof problem in Hawaii?

salt-air corrosion is the leading roof issue in Hawaii, followed by tropical wind and UV degradation.

How long does it take to get a quote in Hawaii?

Most Hawaii homeowners get a written, itemized quote within one business hour of submitting our online form. Your assigned roofing professional schedules an in-home inspection within 2–3 business days, and active leaks get same-day emergency tarping in major metros.
