Kansas climate

Why Kansas roofing is different

Kansas roofs face specific climate stressors — humid continental to semi-arid conditions plus hail damage and tornado wind — that demand different specs than the state next door. Your assigned roofing contractor calibrates material, ventilation, and underlayment to local code and weather load.

Kansas climate metrics affecting roof design
Metric Kansas average Implication for your roof
Average annual snowfall 17″ Ice-and-water shield in eaves recommended; standard underlayment elsewhere.
Average annual rainfall 30″ Standard drip-edge + sealed valleys per IRC R905.
Hail risk severe Class 4 impact-rated shingles cut insurance premiums 5–35% in Kansas.
Hurricane / coastal wind No Standard wind-rated shingles (110 mph) cover inland conditions.

"I had the pleasure to check in multiple times on the progress of installing exterior doors, windows, siding and guttering. The guttering guys were on site and gone before I ever got a chance to meet them. April was on site multiple times to ensure proper progress on the project. Ricardo did an excellent job with the crew making sure that all the details were taken care of. I had multiple opportunities to work with both April and Ricardo! They made changes when necessary everything was able to be Taken care of on a very timely basis! I am happy to provide written or verbal references If anyone has questions! I do remodel work myself, and I am working on the interior of the house at 205 College in Winfield! I actually worked on the carport while they were putting Siding up, then they worked behind me while I was putting new support beams up under the carport. A huge thank you to both April and Ricardo."

"Happy with the whole process! Jonny Paine helped explain our options after confirming hail damage and answered all of my questions. We have a relatively small roof and they were able to remove the old roof and be done with everything before noon. They also cleaned up the area really well, which is appreciated with our young kids."

"The short story: April is AWESOME, and A-R Roofing has been fabulous throughout the whole process. If you’re looking for a contractor to replace your roof, or other various exterior projects, look no further! The long story: When we knew we needed a new roof, as well as a few other things, I called three companies, including A-R Roofing. The other companies pushed to see my insurance claim estimate. I suspect they were just going to say, “Ok, we’ll fix what they say is damaged for the amount they’re paying.” I knew the insurance adjuster had missed some things, and I just wanted someone that knew what they were doing to help us make sure the insurance covered everything they should. A-R Roofing sent April out to look at our house. She impressed us from the first meeting. She spent a good amount of time looking our house over for weather related damage that the insurance should cover. She showed us what she found, and was honest about what was weather related and what wasn’t (and would not be covered by the insurance). She never once asked to see our insurance paperwork. It was obvious she knew what to look for, and she was willing to spend time to do a thorough job helping us. We then shared our estimate with her and she began working with us on filing the insurance supplements to cover all the damage to our house. She even helped us file supplements for things we weren’t planning on having A-R Roofing do for us. Insurance was being slow, but she kept in touch and helped where she could. Then the September 3rd hail storm hit, and there was a lot more damage to our house. We ended up having to file a second claim, and go through the process of waiting for an adjuster to come and for the insurance to do their thing. Once everything finally came through, April helped us again to make sure the insurance covered everything they should, and submitted the forms we needed to file for supplements. When everything was finally approved, she quickly got the crews out to do our work. Both crews were respectful, and did a great job quickly and efficiently! They thoroughly cleaned up after themselves as well. We are very happy with the work they did! Again, April has been awesome throughout this whole process. We feel very blessed to have had her helping us, and she feels like a friend to our family now. She never made us feel like a bother, and was always willing to help. She went above and beyond what most would likely do! Everyone we have dealt with from A-R Roofing has been great, from the lady that answered the phone when we first called, to the crews that actually did the work. We would enthusiastically recommend them to anyone that needs work done on their house!"

Our Kansas vetting methodology

Before any contractor joins our Kansas network we pull and verify:

  1. 01 We pull the contractor's active Kansas state or municipal roofing license and verify it against the issuing board's online registry.
  2. 02 We require a general liability certificate showing $1,000,000+ per-occurrence coverage.
  3. 03 We require a workers compensation certificate for Kansas and every other state the contractor operates in.
  4. 04 We confirm at least one active manufacturer certification — GAF Master Elite, CertainTeed ShingleMaster, or Owens Corning Platinum Preferred.
  5. 05 We pull the BBB profile (minimum rating A-).
  6. 06 We audit public review profiles — Google, BBB, and Angi — for ≥ 4.5★ across ≥ 25 reviews.
  7. 07 Our regional ops manager conducts an in-person Kansas crew interview before the contractor takes any leads.

Our regional ops team re-verifies every contractor's documentation every 12 months. We remove any contractor who fails re-verification from the network within 30 days. Network contractors are independent businesses, not employees of RoofPros USA.

Roofing FAQ for Kansas homeowners

What is the 25% rule for roofing in Kansas?

If more than 25% of your shingles show storm damage, granule loss, lifting, or curling, full replacement usually beats patch repair on lifecycle cost. Kansas insurance carriers also use this threshold — once 25% of a roof slope is damaged by a covered peril, most policies pay to replace the entire slope rather than repair it. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) treats 25% as the standard repair-vs-replace inflection point.

What's the average cost of a new roof in Kansas?

For a typical 2,000 sq ft (≈22-square) Kansas home with architectural shingle, plan on $13,800 including tear-off, decking inspection, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, and a manufacturer-registered warranty. Standing-seam metal runs roughly 2–3× that figure but lasts 40–70 years. Repair-only jobs run $380–$1,800 with $1,100 the average roofing-repair-project spend.

How do I tell if a Kansas roofer is dishonest?

Five red flags every Kansas homeowner should watch for: (1) door-knockers showing up after a storm with no local address, (2) demands for full payment upfront — standard deposit is 25–30% with the balance due after final inspection, (3) no written, itemized estimate with named materials and brand, (4) verbal "guarantee" instead of a written manufacturer + workmanship warranty, and (5) no proof of $1M+ general liability insurance and workers compensation. Always verify the contractor in your state's online registry and the BBB before signing.

What is the cheapest time of year to get a new roof in Kansas?

Late winter through early spring (typically February–April) is the cheapest time to schedule a Kansas roof replacement. Demand is lowest, crews have open calendars, and contractors often discount 5–15%. Avoid the August–October peak when storm-damage claims spike. Schedule before hail season starts in your area. Emergency repairs are available year-round.

Do I need a licensed roofer in Kansas?

Kansas licensing is by county. Johnson, Sedgwick, Wyandotte, and Shawnee counties have specific roofing registrations.

What roof material works best in Kansas?

Given Kansas's humid continental to semi-arid climate, the most popular choices are Class 4 impact shingle, stone-coated steel, standing-seam metal. Local building practices, hail and wind risk, and snow load all factor in — your assigned local roofing contractor recommends the right system after a free inspection.

What's the most common roof problem in Kansas?

hail damage is the leading roof issue in Kansas, followed by tornado wind and wind uplift. Hail damage is a major insurance-claim driver here — Class 4 impact shingles are widely recommended.

How long does it take to get a quote in Kansas?

Most Kansas homeowners get a written, itemized quote within one business hour of submitting our online form. Your assigned roofing professional schedules an in-home inspection within 2–3 business days, and active leaks get same-day emergency tarping in major metros.
