Louisiana climate

Why Louisiana roofing is different

Louisiana roofs face specific climate stressors — humid subtropical conditions plus hurricane wind and flooding — that demand different specs than the state next door. Your assigned roofing contractor calibrates material, ventilation, and underlayment to local code and weather load.

Louisiana climate metrics affecting roof design
Metric Louisiana average Implication for your roof
Average annual snowfall 0″ Minimal snow load; standard synthetic underlayment is sufficient.
Average annual rainfall 60″ Drip-edge + valley flashing critical; gutter sizing should match high-volume runoff.
Hail risk moderate Architectural shingles with sealed strips handle most Louisiana weather.
Hurricane / coastal wind Yes — coastal counties 130 mph wind-rated shingles + ring-shank nails for FORTIFIED Roof eligibility.

"We had a great experience working with this company on our roof repair. They were easy to communicate with, showed up when they said they would, and got the job done on schedule. The team was polite and careful with our yard, and they explained everything step by step so we always knew what was going on. The quality of the work is excellent — the roof looks solid and neat. We’re really glad we chose them and would definitely call them again in the future."

"We needed a full roof replacement and were nervous about the process, but these guys made it super easy from start to finish. The office kept us updated on the schedule, the crew was on time every day, and they finished sooner than expected. The new roof looks fantastic and we’ve already had neighbors asking who did the work. It’s great to find a company that’s honest, reliable, and does quality work."

"Billy McLain may not be very good-looking, but that guy has loads of product knowledge and work ethic! He originally bid on my roof several months ago, and during that encounter he told me far more about the roofing materials, processes, and codes than I ever thought I needed to know. However, as I shopped to other contractors, I found the education he gave me very useful in testing whether those contractors were qualified. After several months, I reached back out to him, and we scheduled the build. His guys showed up early in the morning and worked like beasts all day long. They were very organized, focused, and were hyper-careful to respect me, my home, and the grounds around it. They were careful to leave the egress from my garage wide open for my use, didn't park any equipment on my grass, smoke anything on the job-site, or do anything that could be construed in any way as offensive. My roof was 69 square--- HUGE-- but they were completely done and cleaned up in 2 days flat. My home is 4000 sq feet and it's all on one floor. So, that's a lot of perimeter to walk around. Out of curiosity, I have intentionally walked around it looking for nails, shards of wood, scraps of felt, or any debris at all left behind. Nothing. It's like they vacuumed the grass like shag carpet when they left. My wife was walking into our garage the evening after they finished and remarked, "They swept this driveway better than we do." The price isn't the most important aspect of any transaction, but his price was extremely competitive. Aside from having to pay that very competitive bill, working with Mobile Roofing and Construction was completely painless. If you're in the market for a new roof, you'll do yourself a huge favor to go ahead and call Billy today. Ray Charles can see that Mobile Roofing and Billy McLain are hands down your best option."

"Excellent service, professional, fast and precise. They placed a metal roof over our patio, cut an access hole for beams and repaired seamlessly, did gutters with unique angles and connections due to our strange roofline, and repaired a leak. They worked within our schedule to coincide with other work crews. Very happy with their work she's highly recommend."

Our Louisiana vetting methodology

Before any contractor joins our Louisiana network we pull and verify:

  1. 01 We pull the contractor's active Louisiana state or municipal roofing license and verify it against the issuing board's online registry.
  2. 02 We require a general liability certificate showing $1,000,000+ per-occurrence coverage.
  3. 03 We require a workers compensation certificate for Louisiana and every other state the contractor operates in.
  4. 04 We confirm at least one active manufacturer certification — GAF Master Elite, CertainTeed ShingleMaster, or Owens Corning Platinum Preferred.
  5. 05 We pull the BBB profile (minimum rating A-).
  6. 06 We audit public review profiles — Google, BBB, and Angi — for ≥ 4.5★ across ≥ 25 reviews.
  7. 07 Our regional ops manager conducts an in-person Louisiana crew interview before the contractor takes any leads.

Our regional ops team re-verifies every contractor's documentation every 12 months. We remove any contractor who fails re-verification from the network within 30 days. Network contractors are independent businesses, not employees of RoofPros USA.

Roofing FAQ for Louisiana homeowners

What is the 25% rule for roofing in Louisiana?

If more than 25% of your shingles show storm damage, granule loss, lifting, or curling, full replacement usually beats patch repair on lifecycle cost. Louisiana insurance carriers also use this threshold — once 25% of a roof slope is damaged by a covered peril, most policies pay to replace the entire slope rather than repair it. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) treats 25% as the standard repair-vs-replace inflection point.

What's the average cost of a new roof in Louisiana?

For a typical 2,000 sq ft (≈22-square) Louisiana home with architectural shingle, plan on $14,200 including tear-off, decking inspection, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, and a manufacturer-registered warranty. Standing-seam metal runs roughly 2–3× that figure but lasts 40–70 years. Repair-only jobs run $380–$1,800 with $1,100 the average roofing-repair-project spend.

How do I tell if a Louisiana roofer is dishonest?

Five red flags every Louisiana homeowner should watch for: (1) door-knockers showing up after a storm with no local address, (2) demands for full payment upfront — standard deposit is 25–30% with the balance due after final inspection, (3) no written, itemized estimate with named materials and brand, (4) verbal "guarantee" instead of a written manufacturer + workmanship warranty, and (5) no proof of $1M+ general liability insurance and workers compensation. Always verify the contractor in your state's online registry and the BBB before signing.

What is the cheapest time of year to get a new roof in Louisiana?

Late winter through early spring (typically February–April) is the cheapest time to schedule a Louisiana roof replacement. Demand is lowest, crews have open calendars, and contractors often discount 5–15%. Avoid the August–October peak when storm-damage claims spike. Emergency repairs are available year-round.

Do I need a licensed roofer in Louisiana?

Louisiana requires a State Licensing Board for Contractors license for residential work over $75,000 and any commercial work over $50,000.

What roof material works best in Louisiana?

Given Louisiana's humid subtropical climate, the most popular choices are high-wind shingle, standing-seam metal, concrete tile. Local building practices, hail and wind risk, and snow load all factor in — your assigned local roofing contractor recommends the right system after a free inspection.

What's the most common roof problem in Louisiana?

hurricane wind is the leading roof issue in Louisiana, followed by flooding and mold growth.

How long does it take to get a quote in Louisiana?

Most Louisiana homeowners get a written, itemized quote within one business hour of submitting our online form. Your assigned roofing professional schedules an in-home inspection within 2–3 business days, and active leaks get same-day emergency tarping in major metros.

What is the 25% rule for roofing?

The 25% Rule in roofing serves as a guideline for both homeowners and contractors when planning roofing projects. Basically, it means that if more than 25% of your roof's surface needs repairs, it's often wiser to contemplate a full replacement rather than patchwork.

What is the new law for roofing contractors in Louisiana?

Effective January 1, 2026, contractors performing residential roofing work valued at $7,500 or more must hold a residential roofing or residential construction license, with new examination requirements unless already licensed in certain related classifications.
