Maine climate
Maine roofs face specific climate stressors — humid continental conditions plus ice damming and snow load — that demand different specs than the state next door. Your assigned roofing contractor calibrates material, ventilation, and underlayment to local code and weather load.
| Metric | Maine average | Implication for your roof |
|---|---|---|
| Average annual snowfall | 65″ | Ice-dam underlayment + ice-and-water shield required at eaves and valleys. |
| Average annual rainfall | 47″ | Standard drip-edge + sealed valleys per IRC R905. |
| Hail risk | low | Standard architectural shingle systems perform well across Maine. |
| Hurricane / coastal wind | Yes — coastal counties | 130 mph wind-rated shingles + ring-shank nails for FORTIFIED Roof eligibility. |
For most Maine homes, standing-seam metal and architectural shingle are the two most-installed systems. Asphalt shingles remain the most affordable roofing option; standing-seam metal is the longest-lasting (40–70 years).
Roofing services
Roof-Master Maine installs and repairs every residential roof system — architectural shingle re-roofs, standing-seam metal, hail/wind storm restoration, leak repair, gutter installation, and Class 4 impact-rated upgrades — same network across all 21 Maine cities.
| Service | Typical SLA | Most-requested in |
|---|---|---|
| Free roof inspection | Same week | Statewide Maine |
| Storm-damage assessment + tarp | 24–48h | Portland, Lewiston |
| Roof repair (leaks, missing shingles, flashing) | 2–3 business days | Statewide Maine |
| Full re-roof (architectural shingle) | 1–3 days on-site | Statewide Maine |
| Standing-seam metal roof installation | 3–5 days on-site | Rural / agricultural areas |
| Gutter installation + gutter-guard upgrades | 1 day | Statewide Maine |

"This company was so great to deal with. I used their convenient financing to get my roof done. Todd was professional and his crew was amazing. I did carpentry most of my life and they were probably the best roofers I ever encountered. I highly recommend Todd and his crew and Home Roofing Solutions!!!! My wife and I are very pleased with the job they did!"

"From Roofing Advisor Ryan to Foreman Bruce and his crew ~ very professional and thorough. I was very nervous having a roof done during winter which included installation of a new sky light but all assured me it would be done right! So far so good. Done in 5 hours (small one story home), arrived 7am as promised, tarps laid no debris left on property. Told any problems call and they’d be out within 48 hours. So far all is good and we’ve had some bad weather."

"Review for Home Roofing Solutions 11/13/2025 Radcliffe Glen – Portland Home Roofing Solutions recently completed a 133,000 square foot (133 square) roofing project for our condo association in Portland. This was for roofs over five units (four attached). Todd directed the fourteen-person crew over four days from 7 am to 6 pm each day. The crew was unusually hard working, polite, and consistently diligent. One could not ask for more. They took special care to spare all plantings by building plywood structures and canvas or tarp slides to remove the original shingles without damage. They installed new ridge vents, new broan vents, new pipe boots, new aluminum drip edging, new chimney flashing on five chimneys, and new step flashing throughout. Cleanup was exemplary although there was one neat structure of pallets and extra shingles that was removed a few days later. Todd was very helpful and managed any adjustments that arose. The only change order for this large project was one sheet of plywood needed to repair a small area of the original roof. Ben was the original contact person who developed the bid, adjusting to our every request. We initially contacted four high-quality companies who all submitted bids. HRS was the low bid which made some members of our board initially skeptical. After all was completed however, we were very, very happy."

"Levi and his crew with ABL roofing did an excellent job. Clean up was 100% top notch. The communication was very good between the ABL manager (Levi) and myself. The price was exactly as quoted and the job was completed in one day which was important to me. I highly recommend ABL roofing for a full roof replacement including Skylights."

"ABL Roofing is an amazing company ! I’d like to thank Tom, Levi and the whole team for a fantastic experience. Their work and customer service is top notch. I was referred to ABL through a Close Friend who owns a local construction company and also a Family Member both of whom spoke very highly about their work quality and I was absolutely not disappointed ! Levi kept me constantly up to date regarding scheduling and Tom and his crew showed up exactly as promised. They were polite and professional and left my property spotless when they were finished. There were some unforeseen structural issues during the job and they tackled those issues without a hitch. Throughout the job Tom assured me that they could and would be able to complete the job as scheduled (about 7 hours) and they delivered everything they promised ! If you are looking for a Roofing company that he can Trust and Rely on ABL is who I would recommend !! Thanks !! Robert Mayer Woolwich"

If more than 25% of your shingles show storm damage, granule loss, lifting, or curling, full replacement usually beats patch repair on lifecycle cost. Maine insurance carriers also use this threshold — once 25% of a roof slope is damaged by a covered peril, most policies pay to replace the entire slope rather than repair it. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) treats 25% as the standard repair-vs-replace inflection point.
For a typical 2,000 sq ft (≈22-square) Maine home with architectural shingle, plan on $14,200 including tear-off, decking inspection, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, and a manufacturer-registered warranty. Standing-seam metal runs roughly 2–3× that figure but lasts 40–70 years. Repair-only jobs run $380–$1,800 with $1,100 the average roofing-repair-project spend.
Five red flags every Maine homeowner should watch for: (1) door-knockers showing up after a storm with no local address, (2) demands for full payment upfront — standard deposit is 25–30% with the balance due after final inspection, (3) no written, itemized estimate with named materials and brand, (4) verbal "guarantee" instead of a written manufacturer + workmanship warranty, and (5) no proof of $1M+ general liability insurance and workers compensation. Always verify the contractor in your state's online registry and the BBB before signing.
Late winter through early spring (typically February–April) is the cheapest time to schedule a Maine roof replacement. Demand is lowest, crews have open calendars, and contractors often discount 5–15%. Avoid the August–October peak when storm-damage claims spike. Emergency repairs are available year-round.
Maine has no state roofing license. Contractors must register their business and carry workers comp insurance.
Given Maine's humid continental climate, the most popular choices are standing-seam metal, architectural shingle, cedar shake. Local building practices, hail and wind risk, and snow load all factor in — your assigned local roofing contractor recommends the right system after a free inspection.
ice damming is the leading roof issue in Maine, followed by snow load and nor'easter wind.
Most Maine homeowners get a written, itemized quote within one business hour of submitting our online form. Your assigned roofing professional schedules an in-home inspection within 2–3 business days, and active leaks get same-day emergency tarping in major metros.
The 25% Rule in roofing serves as a guideline for both homeowners and contractors when planning roofing projects. Basically, it means that if more than 25% of your roof's surface needs repairs, it's often wiser to contemplate a full replacement rather than patchwork.
Standard asphalt shingle roofs in Bangor typically range from $9,000 to $15,000. Larger homes, steep pitches, or premium shingles can run closer to $16,000–$18,000. Repairs to decking or ventilation may add to the total.
Fall is considered the best time to schedule a roofing project because it often boasts the best temperature range for roof installation. The weather has cooled off from summer highs, but it hasn't gotten too cold yet.
Roof-Master matches you with a vetted Maine licensed contractor in your zip within minutes.
