Oregon climate

Why Oregon roofing is different

Oregon roofs face specific climate stressors — oceanic to semi-arid conditions plus moss + algae growth and long-term moisture exposure — that demand different specs than the state next door. Your assigned roofing contractor calibrates material, ventilation, and underlayment to local code and weather load.

Oregon climate metrics affecting roof design
Metric Oregon average Implication for your roof
Average annual snowfall 6″ Minimal snow load; standard synthetic underlayment is sufficient.
Average annual rainfall 43″ Standard drip-edge + sealed valleys per IRC R905.
Hail risk low Standard architectural shingle systems perform well across Oregon.
Hurricane / coastal wind No Standard wind-rated shingles (110 mph) cover inland conditions.

"Extremely happy with our experience with Buzzline Roofing. The initial bid was professional and competitive, and they did an amazing job, obviously taking great pride in their work. The crew removed the old roofing plus some old solar panels, replaced a few sheets of plywood, and installed new roofing all within a day and a half. They were fast, efficient and detailed. Plus, they did a fantastic job cleaning up. With the frequent wet weather in Eugene, we were a little anxious about having our roof done in December. They intentionally scheduled the work during a forecasted dry window, so rain was not a factor. Buzzline Roofing exceeded our expectations and we wholeheartedly recommend them!"

"Buzzline Roofing (formally Oregon Roof Guys) did an excellent job replacing my roof at the best price. I also wanted the skylights replaced and new gutters. Buzzline went far above my expectations in all regards, it looks outstanding. I signed the contract in September 2025. It was an easy online process. Amazing fact: Buzzline's deposit was $500, balance due when completed. My other bids involved much larger deposits. To me, that reflects the company's confidence in their pricing and service. My day finally arrived Black Friday 2025. They completed the job in just a few days. I obtained a couple of 'gutter bids'. Buzzline's price was the lowest on that aspect, too. I live in the fir trees, lots of 'cones' and read a lot of negative reviews on "gutter guards" in this area. They recommended larger downspouts that cannot be clogged by 'cones' and waist-level cleanouts. That cost a fraction of what gutter guards cost and I am certain it will be far more effective."

"I am grateful to have discovered Ideal Roofing through Angie. I asked for an estimate on a whim that perhaps I could afford a Metal Roof. Zach came out and performed a thorough inspection which showed that my roof was at end of its life. the cost of metal versus shingle was significant and Zach guided me to hi-quality shingle , GAF with a 25 to 30 yr warranty within my budget. Zach and Spencer were able to work me into the schedule. Jason & crew arrived at scheduled place & time & began their work. Everyone was polite, cheerful & focused on project. 8 hours later they completed the work & left the area cleaner than when they had arrived. They were able to reinstall my Dish & Internet connections, everything worked perfectly upon their departure. I am recommending Ideal Roofing to my friends. Thank you to Zach, Amber, Alissa, Spencer, Jason, Elbin, Jose, Hector Dennis & forgive me I forgot two other workers names. Adrienne Burton Jones PS:A few Days later, weather permitting Val & Francisco came to install the gutters. Val & Francisco were professional, went out of their way to make sure they understood exactly what I wanted. They were able to accommodate my last minute change to Black gutters. They asked me to inspect their work upon completion. My reason for initially wanting a metal roof was because I like the sound of rain falling on the roof. Well it rained all last weekend and I enjoyed hearing the soothing sounds, the gentle rain, on the new metal gutters & drain spout that the awesome team at Ideal Roofing enabled me to have for a very reasonable price. Thank you, I am profoundly grateful. Adrienne Burton-Jones"

Our Oregon vetting methodology

Before any contractor joins our Oregon network we pull and verify:

  1. 01 We pull the contractor's active Oregon state or municipal roofing license and verify it against the issuing board's online registry.
  2. 02 We require a general liability certificate showing $1,000,000+ per-occurrence coverage.
  3. 03 We require a workers compensation certificate for Oregon and every other state the contractor operates in.
  4. 04 We confirm at least one active manufacturer certification — GAF Master Elite, CertainTeed ShingleMaster, or Owens Corning Platinum Preferred.
  5. 05 We pull the BBB profile (minimum rating A-).
  6. 06 We audit public review profiles — Google, BBB, and Angi — for ≥ 4.5★ across ≥ 25 reviews.
  7. 07 Our regional ops manager conducts an in-person Oregon crew interview before the contractor takes any leads.

Our regional ops team re-verifies every contractor's documentation every 12 months. We remove any contractor who fails re-verification from the network within 30 days. Network contractors are independent businesses, not employees of RoofPros USA.

Roofing FAQ for Oregon homeowners

What is the 25% rule for roofing in Oregon?

If more than 25% of your shingles show storm damage, granule loss, lifting, or curling, full replacement usually beats patch repair on lifecycle cost. Oregon insurance carriers also use this threshold — once 25% of a roof slope is damaged by a covered peril, most policies pay to replace the entire slope rather than repair it. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) treats 25% as the standard repair-vs-replace inflection point.

What's the average cost of a new roof in Oregon?

For a typical 2,000 sq ft (≈22-square) Oregon home with architectural shingle, plan on $11,400 including tear-off, decking inspection, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, and a manufacturer-registered warranty. Standing-seam metal runs roughly 2–3× that figure but lasts 40–70 years. Repair-only jobs run $380–$1,800 with $1,100 the average roofing-repair-project spend.

How do I tell if a Oregon roofer is dishonest?

Five red flags every Oregon homeowner should watch for: (1) door-knockers showing up after a storm with no local address, (2) demands for full payment upfront — standard deposit is 25–30% with the balance due after final inspection, (3) no written, itemized estimate with named materials and brand, (4) verbal "guarantee" instead of a written manufacturer + workmanship warranty, and (5) no proof of $1M+ general liability insurance and workers compensation. Always verify the contractor in your state's online registry and the BBB before signing.

What is the cheapest time of year to get a new roof in Oregon?

Late winter through early spring (typically February–April) is the cheapest time to schedule a Oregon roof replacement. Demand is lowest, crews have open calendars, and contractors often discount 5–15%. Avoid the August–October peak when storm-damage claims spike. Emergency repairs are available year-round.

Do I need a licensed roofer in Oregon?

Oregon requires a Construction Contractors Board (CCB) license for any commercial or residential work.

What roof material works best in Oregon?

Given Oregon's oceanic to semi-arid climate, the most popular choices are architectural shingle, standing-seam metal, cedar shake. Local building practices, hail and wind risk, and snow load all factor in — your assigned local roofing contractor recommends the right system after a free inspection.

What's the most common roof problem in Oregon?

moss + algae growth is the leading roof issue in Oregon, followed by long-term moisture exposure and wind uplift (coast).

How long does it take to get a quote in Oregon?

Most Oregon homeowners get a written, itemized quote within one business hour of submitting our online form. Your assigned roofing professional schedules an in-home inspection within 2–3 business days, and active leaks get same-day emergency tarping in major metros.

What is the 25% rule for roofing?

The 25% Rule in roofing serves as a guideline for both homeowners and contractors when planning roofing projects. Basically, it means that if more than 25% of your roof's surface needs repairs, it's often wiser to contemplate a full replacement rather than patchwork.

What is the best time of year to replace shingles?

Fall is considered the best time to schedule a roofing project because it often boasts the best temperature range for roof installation. The weather has cooled off from summer highs, but it hasn't gotten too cold yet.

Is $25,000 a lot for a new roof?

The average cost is around $17,500, with a common range of $11,875 to $25,000. However, the final price depends heavily on your roof's true surface area.
