South Dakota climate

Why South Dakota roofing is different

South Dakota roofs face specific climate stressors — humid continental to semi-arid conditions plus hail damage and snow load — that demand different specs than the state next door. Your assigned roofing contractor calibrates material, ventilation, and underlayment to local code and weather load.

South Dakota climate metrics affecting roof design
Metric South Dakota average Implication for your roof
Average annual snowfall 38″ Ice-dam underlayment + ice-and-water shield required at eaves and valleys.
Average annual rainfall 24″ Standard drip-edge + sealed valleys per IRC R905.
Hail risk severe Class 4 impact-rated shingles cut insurance premiums 5–35% in South Dakota.
Hurricane / coastal wind No Standard wind-rated shingles (110 mph) cover inland conditions.

"After a recent windstorm, I was worried about my roof as I was finding numerous shingles on the ground around my house. The next morning, I called All Over Roofing to see if they could come over to see what my situation was. Katie was very friendly and gave me the information I needed to know that they would be sending a crew to my house as soon as one was available. They showed up exactly when they said they would, checked out my roof and gave me the information I needed...come to find out that the shingles were from my neighbor's house:) Anyway, I was impressed with the service and am highly recommending this company for anyone needing work to their roofs!"

"Our roof was done and we have to get somebody to come fix it. The photos is how they originally left it. I called the same day explaining that I was not happy. They came back the next morning and painted it. I called again, I talked to Brody. He came to the house, apologized and said they were going to make it right. He also told us that crew was no longer working for them. Couple weeks go by and we get a call asking if we could meet them at the house. Brody and Cory the owner came and said that they couldn’t fix it because they would have to redo the siding on our house. They said that the wood underneath was rotten and this was the fix. Nobody once told us this before this day. I finally said I would get a 2nd opinion. They asked us to take the Mitchell roofing sign down out of our yard before the next company came. Now I have called close to 10 times for a bill. Finally got one. Our roof was done last summer. I have a question about our bill, I’ve called 4 times now, I just get told they will call me back. Never has. Hands down the worst customer service I have ever had. I can’t even get a call back to pay them and we have to have someone else come out and see if they can make our roof better!"

Our South Dakota vetting methodology

Before any contractor joins our South Dakota network we pull and verify:

  1. 01 We pull the contractor's active South Dakota state or municipal roofing license and verify it against the issuing board's online registry.
  2. 02 We require a general liability certificate showing $1,000,000+ per-occurrence coverage.
  3. 03 We require a workers compensation certificate for South Dakota and every other state the contractor operates in.
  4. 04 We confirm at least one active manufacturer certification — GAF Master Elite, CertainTeed ShingleMaster, or Owens Corning Platinum Preferred.
  5. 05 We pull the BBB profile (minimum rating A-).
  6. 06 We audit public review profiles — Google, BBB, and Angi — for ≥ 4.5★ across ≥ 25 reviews.
  7. 07 Our regional ops manager conducts an in-person South Dakota crew interview before the contractor takes any leads.

Our regional ops team re-verifies every contractor's documentation every 12 months. We remove any contractor who fails re-verification from the network within 30 days. Network contractors are independent businesses, not employees of RoofPros USA.

Roofing FAQ for South Dakota homeowners

What is the 25% rule for roofing in South Dakota?

If more than 25% of your shingles show storm damage, granule loss, lifting, or curling, full replacement usually beats patch repair on lifecycle cost. South Dakota insurance carriers also use this threshold — once 25% of a roof slope is damaged by a covered peril, most policies pay to replace the entire slope rather than repair it. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) treats 25% as the standard repair-vs-replace inflection point.

What's the average cost of a new roof in South Dakota?

For a typical 2,000 sq ft (≈22-square) South Dakota home with architectural shingle, plan on $13,800 including tear-off, decking inspection, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, and a manufacturer-registered warranty. Standing-seam metal runs roughly 2–3× that figure but lasts 40–70 years. Repair-only jobs run $380–$1,800 with $1,100 the average roofing-repair-project spend.

How do I tell if a South Dakota roofer is dishonest?

Five red flags every South Dakota homeowner should watch for: (1) door-knockers showing up after a storm with no local address, (2) demands for full payment upfront — standard deposit is 25–30% with the balance due after final inspection, (3) no written, itemized estimate with named materials and brand, (4) verbal "guarantee" instead of a written manufacturer + workmanship warranty, and (5) no proof of $1M+ general liability insurance and workers compensation. Always verify the contractor in your state's online registry and the BBB before signing.

What is the cheapest time of year to get a new roof in South Dakota?

Late winter through early spring (typically February–April) is the cheapest time to schedule a South Dakota roof replacement. Demand is lowest, crews have open calendars, and contractors often discount 5–15%. Avoid the August–October peak when storm-damage claims spike. Schedule before hail season starts in your area. Emergency repairs are available year-round.

Do I need a licensed roofer in South Dakota?

South Dakota requires a state sales/use tax license and contractor excise tax license; no specific roofing license at state level.

What roof material works best in South Dakota?

Given South Dakota's humid continental to semi-arid climate, the most popular choices are Class 4 impact shingle, standing-seam metal. Local building practices, hail and wind risk, and snow load all factor in — your assigned local roofing contractor recommends the right system after a free inspection.

What's the most common roof problem in South Dakota?

hail damage is the leading roof issue in South Dakota, followed by snow load and wind uplift. Hail damage is a major insurance-claim driver here — Class 4 impact shingles are widely recommended.

How long does it take to get a quote in South Dakota?

Most South Dakota homeowners get a written, itemized quote within one business hour of submitting our online form. Your assigned roofing professional schedules an in-home inspection within 2–3 business days, and active leaks get same-day emergency tarping in major metros.

What is the 25% rule for roofing?

The 25% Rule in roofing serves as a guideline for both homeowners and contractors when planning roofing projects. Basically, it means that if more than 25% of your roof's surface needs repairs, it's often wiser to contemplate a full replacement rather than patchwork.

What is the best time of year to replace shingles?

Fall is considered the best time to schedule a roofing project because it often boasts the best temperature range for roof installation. The weather has cooled off from summer highs, but it hasn't gotten too cold yet.

How much do roofing jobs typically cost?

While prices vary depending on region, complexity, and material type, most homeowners can expect to pay between $7,000 and $15,000 with the average roof placement in the U.S now costing around $11,500. Premium roofing systems or complex installations may cost as much as $30,000.
