Tennessee climate

Why Tennessee roofing is different

Tennessee roofs face specific climate stressors — humid subtropical conditions plus hail damage and tornado wind — that demand different specs than the state next door. Your assigned roofing contractor calibrates material, ventilation, and underlayment to local code and weather load.

Tennessee climate metrics affecting roof design
Metric Tennessee average Implication for your roof
Average annual snowfall 7″ Minimal snow load; standard synthetic underlayment is sufficient.
Average annual rainfall 52″ Drip-edge + valley flashing critical; gutter sizing should match high-volume runoff.
Hail risk high Class 4 impact-rated shingles qualify for hail-discount endorsements in Tennessee.
Hurricane / coastal wind No Standard wind-rated shingles (110 mph) cover inland conditions.

"Our experience with Strength Roofing was amazing. From Steven, who walked us through at the beginning step by step including a video that helped us see the problems with our roof, sent us a picture of what our home would look like with the type of roof we picked out, and worked with us on pricing and financing. Then there was Josh and his team who showed up on time everyday, were very respectful, made sure that all my questions were answered, and did a professional job! Would definitely recommend them, hands down!"

"Strength roofing did a very professional job with repairing our roof. Brandon Mabry was especially helpful with both his pre and post inspections. Using photos he explained in detail exactly what needed to be done and made sure the work was done properly. This was very reassuring to us."

"Wonderful experience! After a severe weather event, I urgently needed an emergency roof repair and inspection. I contacted several roofing companies, but because it was a holiday weekend, finding help was difficult. Stephen from Strength Roofing came through—he arrived exactly when promised and completed the emergency repair without any delays or waiting around. Following the inspection, Stephen provided detailed photos along with a clear, thorough explanation of the entire process from start to finish. He set expectations upfront and delivered 100% on everything he said he would do. I would absolutely recommend Strength Roofing to anyone in need of reliable, professional roofing services."

"Need a new roof? I highly suggest Patriot Roofing. Henry Bennett, he is down to earth and knows what he’s talking about. He has been there from the start. He comes out gets on the roof and looks it over. I filed an insurance claim. He came out and meet with the person who is there to take the pictures to send to to our adjuster.. Day of the construction, he came to the site when the crew got here and stayed until the materials were delivered, he makes sure the inventory is right. Makes sure the decking issues are addressed if any. He is 100% honest and trustworthy with you and leaves out no details. He came back out after everything was finished and put away a few stacks of shingles that were left over. The crew, man, they were great. They put tarps around the house and got started on the roof. Waisting no time. They did a great job. They cleaned up everything and left no trash or nails behind. Even put back my decorations that were in my flowerbeds."

Our Tennessee vetting methodology

Before any contractor joins our Tennessee network we pull and verify:

  1. 01 We pull the contractor's active Tennessee state or municipal roofing license and verify it against the issuing board's online registry.
  2. 02 We require a general liability certificate showing $1,000,000+ per-occurrence coverage.
  3. 03 We require a workers compensation certificate for Tennessee and every other state the contractor operates in.
  4. 04 We confirm at least one active manufacturer certification — GAF Master Elite, CertainTeed ShingleMaster, or Owens Corning Platinum Preferred.
  5. 05 We pull the BBB profile (minimum rating A-).
  6. 06 We audit public review profiles — Google, BBB, and Angi — for ≥ 4.5★ across ≥ 25 reviews.
  7. 07 Our regional ops manager conducts an in-person Tennessee crew interview before the contractor takes any leads.

Our regional ops team re-verifies every contractor's documentation every 12 months. We remove any contractor who fails re-verification from the network within 30 days. Network contractors are independent businesses, not employees of RoofPros USA.

Roofing FAQ for Tennessee homeowners

What is the 25% rule for roofing in Tennessee?

If more than 25% of your shingles show storm damage, granule loss, lifting, or curling, full replacement usually beats patch repair on lifecycle cost. Tennessee insurance carriers also use this threshold — once 25% of a roof slope is damaged by a covered peril, most policies pay to replace the entire slope rather than repair it. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) treats 25% as the standard repair-vs-replace inflection point.

What's the average cost of a new roof in Tennessee?

For a typical 2,000 sq ft (≈22-square) Tennessee home with architectural shingle, plan on $12,600 including tear-off, decking inspection, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, and a manufacturer-registered warranty. Standing-seam metal runs roughly 2–3× that figure but lasts 40–70 years. Repair-only jobs run $380–$1,800 with $1,100 the average roofing-repair-project spend.

How do I tell if a Tennessee roofer is dishonest?

Five red flags every Tennessee homeowner should watch for: (1) door-knockers showing up after a storm with no local address, (2) demands for full payment upfront — standard deposit is 25–30% with the balance due after final inspection, (3) no written, itemized estimate with named materials and brand, (4) verbal "guarantee" instead of a written manufacturer + workmanship warranty, and (5) no proof of $1M+ general liability insurance and workers compensation. Always verify the contractor in your state's online registry and the BBB before signing.

What is the cheapest time of year to get a new roof in Tennessee?

Late winter through early spring (typically February–April) is the cheapest time to schedule a Tennessee roof replacement. Demand is lowest, crews have open calendars, and contractors often discount 5–15%. Avoid the August–October peak when storm-damage claims spike. Schedule before hail season starts in your area. Emergency repairs are available year-round.

Do I need a licensed roofer in Tennessee?

Tennessee requires a Limited Licensed Plumber/Roofer or full Contractor license for projects over $25,000 through the Board for Licensing Contractors.

What roof material works best in Tennessee?

Given Tennessee's humid subtropical climate, the most popular choices are architectural shingle, standing-seam metal. Local building practices, hail and wind risk, and snow load all factor in — your assigned local roofing contractor recommends the right system after a free inspection.

What's the most common roof problem in Tennessee?

hail damage is the leading roof issue in Tennessee, followed by tornado wind and wind uplift. Hail damage is a major insurance-claim driver here — Class 4 impact shingles are widely recommended.

How long does it take to get a quote in Tennessee?

Most Tennessee homeowners get a written, itemized quote within one business hour of submitting our online form. Your assigned roofing professional schedules an in-home inspection within 2–3 business days, and active leaks get same-day emergency tarping in major metros.
