West Virginia climate

Why West Virginia roofing is different

West Virginia roofs face specific climate stressors — humid subtropical to continental conditions plus ice damming and snow load — that demand different specs than the state next door. Your assigned roofing contractor calibrates material, ventilation, and underlayment to local code and weather load.

West Virginia climate metrics affecting roof design
Metric West Virginia average Implication for your roof
Average annual snowfall 30″ Ice-dam underlayment + ice-and-water shield required at eaves and valleys.
Average annual rainfall 45″ Standard drip-edge + sealed valleys per IRC R905.
Hail risk moderate Architectural shingles with sealed strips handle most West Virginia weather.
Hurricane / coastal wind No Standard wind-rated shingles (110 mph) cover inland conditions.

"5 Stars!! Real estate isn’t always glamorous—sometimes it’s a high-stakes race against the clock! I recently had a situation where we had just two weeks to get a brand-new roof installed on a listing to save a buyer’s loan approval. Between coordinating the installation for my sellers and rushing a last-minute HOA application, the pressure was definitely on. I want to give a massive shout-out to the team that helped me cross the finish line: Ridgeline Roofers: They were incredibly fast, affordable, and so easy to work with. They understood the urgency and delivered quality work right when we needed it most. Ashburn Farm HOA: A huge thank you for reviewing applications weekly. Their efficiency was the key to us meeting our deadline! It really takes a village (and a lot of coffee) to get to the closing table. If you need a team that performs under pressure, these are the folks to call!"

"Impressed with Ridgeline Roofers' response to my call. Arrived at agreed appointment times. Identified the issue (missing/damaged cedar shingles) and did a great job of replacing these quickly. Very neat work and I appreciated the photographic evidence they provided"

"We had a great experience with Augustin Roofing. They did a wonderful job, and we’re very happy with the results. Johnny, our salesperson, was especially kind and helpful. Whenever we spoke with him, he genuinely tried to solve our problem and made us feel supported throughout the process. The only small issue we experienced was communication. At times, it was a bit difficult to reach someone, and we had to call more than once to get a response. However, once we connected, they were always helpful and professional. Overall, we’re very satisfied with their work and would recommend them."

"We had our roof replaced in 2024 by Augustine Roofing after going back and forth with our insurance company. Our next door neighbor received a full roof replacement for hail damage by the same insurance company while our claim was denied. In any case, we worked with Dakota for a couple of years and finally replaced the roof without insurance. Augustine provided the best price from the start. The other competitors were priced 40-50 percent higher and were trying to negotiate 5-10 percent discounts each time stating that they would not be making any money on the work. Even after a couple of back and forths with the company representatives, the competitors could not match Augustine's initial price. We also had Augustine replace our roof dormers with PVC. Looks great. The price was again better than the competitors. We would definitely look to Augustine for future work such as new gutters. Work crew was on time and did a great job. We would recommend Augustine to our friends."

"This is the second time we have used this company – first was for installation of a new roof – this time for fascia and soffit. They just keep getting better. Overall, the workmanship was excellent, the price reasonable, and most importantly, Augustine continued to build a huge amount of trust with the customer through an honest and transparent process from beginning to end. Originally, we hoped to do this project in the fall of 2024 and had begun the bidding process. Augustine was unable to bid due to workload, but rather than string me along with false promises, they provided an honest estimate of availability in early 2025. In the meantime, we bid to several other highly rated companies all which either attempted to upsell or provided limited options. Because Augustine provided such good care in our roofing installation, we decided to wait for their availability. Once available, scheduling the initial estimate was easy and timely, and good communication continued through the back and forth of settling details in the contract and changes after signing. However, we waited more than two months for word on our official start date, and I had to prompt them to get answers. Effective communication from the onsite foreman was also a bit lacking as I was unsure when the team would arrive, the number of days it would take, or what was to be accomplished on any given day. I would have preferred a proactive approach in both these regards. Scoping of work is truly where Augustine shines. Dakota Biller was a Godsend. He expertly talked through the full scope of options, materials, costs, colors, pros, and cons. He actively listened to our needs (unique due to the dark color aesthetic of our trim), provided helpful guidance, and did not attempt to upsell. We settled on wood with aluminum cladding for the fascia, vinyl soffit, replacing vice reusing existing gutters, and even replacement of a small section of damaged siding. Quality of Work: Installation was professional and cleanup was thorough. The final product looks magnificent! Pricing: Price was the most reasonable of all highly ranked companies even with totally replacing our 6-inch gutters. Part of this was due to Augustine’s willingness to only replace rotted fascia with new wood – other companies saw it as an all or nothing prospect. Their 10-year warranty provided peace of mind. This was a RARE hassle-free project, and I cannot recommend Augustine Roofing enough."

Our West Virginia vetting methodology

Before any contractor joins our West Virginia network we pull and verify:

  1. 01 We pull the contractor's active West Virginia state or municipal roofing license and verify it against the issuing board's online registry.
  2. 02 We require a general liability certificate showing $1,000,000+ per-occurrence coverage.
  3. 03 We require a workers compensation certificate for West Virginia and every other state the contractor operates in.
  4. 04 We confirm at least one active manufacturer certification — GAF Master Elite, CertainTeed ShingleMaster, or Owens Corning Platinum Preferred.
  5. 05 We pull the BBB profile (minimum rating A-).
  6. 06 We audit public review profiles — Google, BBB, and Angi — for ≥ 4.5★ across ≥ 25 reviews.
  7. 07 Our regional ops manager conducts an in-person West Virginia crew interview before the contractor takes any leads.

Our regional ops team re-verifies every contractor's documentation every 12 months. We remove any contractor who fails re-verification from the network within 30 days. Network contractors are independent businesses, not employees of RoofPros USA.

Roofing FAQ for West Virginia homeowners

What is the 25% rule for roofing in West Virginia?

If more than 25% of your shingles show storm damage, granule loss, lifting, or curling, full replacement usually beats patch repair on lifecycle cost. West Virginia insurance carriers also use this threshold — once 25% of a roof slope is damaged by a covered peril, most policies pay to replace the entire slope rather than repair it. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) treats 25% as the standard repair-vs-replace inflection point.

What's the average cost of a new roof in West Virginia?

For a typical 2,000 sq ft (≈22-square) West Virginia home with architectural shingle, plan on $11,400 including tear-off, decking inspection, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, and a manufacturer-registered warranty. Standing-seam metal runs roughly 2–3× that figure but lasts 40–70 years. Repair-only jobs run $380–$1,800 with $1,100 the average roofing-repair-project spend.

How do I tell if a West Virginia roofer is dishonest?

Five red flags every West Virginia homeowner should watch for: (1) door-knockers showing up after a storm with no local address, (2) demands for full payment upfront — standard deposit is 25–30% with the balance due after final inspection, (3) no written, itemized estimate with named materials and brand, (4) verbal "guarantee" instead of a written manufacturer + workmanship warranty, and (5) no proof of $1M+ general liability insurance and workers compensation. Always verify the contractor in your state's online registry and the BBB before signing.

What is the cheapest time of year to get a new roof in West Virginia?

Late winter through early spring (typically February–April) is the cheapest time to schedule a West Virginia roof replacement. Demand is lowest, crews have open calendars, and contractors often discount 5–15%. Avoid the August–October peak when storm-damage claims spike. Emergency repairs are available year-round.

Do I need a licensed roofer in West Virginia?

West Virginia requires a Contractor License through the Division of Labor for any work over $2,500.

What roof material works best in West Virginia?

Given West Virginia's humid subtropical to continental climate, the most popular choices are architectural shingle, standing-seam metal. Local building practices, hail and wind risk, and snow load all factor in — your assigned local roofing contractor recommends the right system after a free inspection.

What's the most common roof problem in West Virginia?

ice damming is the leading roof issue in West Virginia, followed by snow load and hail damage.

How long does it take to get a quote in West Virginia?

Most West Virginia homeowners get a written, itemized quote within one business hour of submitting our online form. Your assigned roofing professional schedules an in-home inspection within 2–3 business days, and active leaks get same-day emergency tarping in major metros.
