Montana climate
Montana roofs face specific climate stressors — semi-arid to alpine conditions plus snow load and wind uplift — that demand different specs than the state next door. Your assigned roofing contractor calibrates material, ventilation, and underlayment to local code and weather load.
| Metric | Montana average | Implication for your roof |
|---|---|---|
| Average annual snowfall | 55″ | Ice-dam underlayment + ice-and-water shield required at eaves and valleys. |
| Average annual rainfall | 15″ | Standard drip-edge + sealed valleys per IRC R905. |
| Hail risk | high | Class 4 impact-rated shingles qualify for hail-discount endorsements in Montana. |
| Hurricane / coastal wind | No | Standard wind-rated shingles (110 mph) cover inland conditions. |
For most Montana homes, standing-seam metal and architectural shingle are the two most-installed systems. Asphalt shingles remain the most affordable roofing option; standing-seam metal is the longest-lasting (40–70 years).
Roofing services
Roof-Master Montana installs and repairs every residential roof system — architectural shingle re-roofs, standing-seam metal, hail/wind storm restoration, leak repair, gutter installation, and Class 4 impact-rated upgrades — same network across all 27 Montana cities.
| Service | Typical SLA | Most-requested in |
|---|---|---|
| Free roof inspection | Same week | Statewide Montana |
| Storm-damage assessment + tarp | 24–48h | Billings, Missoula |
| Roof repair (leaks, missing shingles, flashing) | 2–3 business days | Statewide Montana |
| Full re-roof (architectural shingle) | 1–3 days on-site | Statewide Montana |
| Standing-seam metal roof installation | 3–5 days on-site | Rural / agricultural areas |
| Gutter installation + gutter-guard upgrades | 1 day | Statewide Montana |
Each service has a dedicated page with pricing, named materials (GAF Timberline HDZ, CertainTeed Landmark, Owens Corning Duration), per-service FAQs, and a licensed local pro for every Montana zip code.

"Dan & Alli, (owners), Anthony (project manager), Nino (crew foreman) & John Hall, our go to guy on our new roof project were awesome people to work with. They all paid attention to detail & answered all of our questions in a timely fashion. A special shout out to John Hall as he seen us through the entirety of this job. His communication was top notch! From 7:00 am to 8:00 am the old roof was removed & the new roof installed & completed by 3:00 the same day. The clean up was great! We were amazed at their workmanship, professional attitude & kindness. We recommend Mountain Roofing to ANYONE needing a new roof or roof repair.! Stellar people to say the least!!"

"The Mountain Roofing crew totally replaced my roof today (8/15). They were here early and at 1.5 hours had the roof completely stripped of the old shingles. By 1 pm the job was completed and they started the clean up process. Went through my yard and the adjoining yard to pickup debris. They then went over the whole area with magnets to get the loose nails. This crew went out of their way to do a complete job. The foreman was fun to talk with and listen to any question that I had during the process. If you want a great job pick- Mountain Roofing crew! Ben Bouley"

"The team at Mountain Roofing is great to work with. The office staff was able to get me a quote quickly and gave me honest feed back on what products to select without trying to sell me more expensive products I didn't need. The crew that installed our roof was very good to work with too. They worked around the weather and got us roofed before it was to cold. The workmanship was amazing and fast. We had a very bad wind storm and Dan came to our house just to check up on it without me calling them. They really care about their work and the relationships the have with their customers. I would highly recommend for a quality roof job."

"We highly recommend A-1 contractors! What professionals! And they aren’t kidding when they say no job too big or too small. We needed a new roof on a small home in the mountains, and we needed it before fall weather set in. Joe, Beau, Jacob, Jose, Sean and Bird fit us in and made the drive out to help us on a Sunday. With A-1 we didn’t have to worry about a thing. They were prompt, prepared, and there were no additional or unexpected costs added to our original estimate. The roof was completed as if by magic, and when they left there was no trace of them having been there at all, except for a beautifully installed roof. I love the fact that the company is family owned, now with their second or third generation of family members in charge, and also appreciate the fact that Joe, one of the owners, came out to work side by side, with the rest of his crew. The precision of their work was impressive. It seemed as if every move was finely orchestrated. With their attention to quality and detail, you can tell that this is a team who has worked together for a while, almost making me wish that I needed another roof so that I could call them again."

"Props to A-1 for re-roofing my house during an epic week of wind. Everyone was so easy to work with; most definitely would hire A-1 again. Even my downwind neighbors were impressed with the cleanliness of the job."

"We recently had A-1 re-do our vinyl flat roof on our home. They were great. They were prompt, professional and the price was exactly what they quoted us. The work is done well, and they are giving us a 5-year warranty on workmanship. The employees who showed up were courteous and friendly. This was a big and expensive job, and they were really top notch. I have no problem recommending them."

If more than 25% of your shingles show storm damage, granule loss, lifting, or curling, full replacement usually beats patch repair on lifecycle cost. Montana insurance carriers also use this threshold — once 25% of a roof slope is damaged by a covered peril, most policies pay to replace the entire slope rather than repair it. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) treats 25% as the standard repair-vs-replace inflection point.
For a typical 2,000 sq ft (≈22-square) Montana home with architectural shingle, plan on $12,600 including tear-off, decking inspection, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, and a manufacturer-registered warranty. Standing-seam metal runs roughly 2–3× that figure but lasts 40–70 years. Repair-only jobs run $380–$1,800 with $1,100 the average roofing-repair-project spend.
Five red flags every Montana homeowner should watch for: (1) door-knockers showing up after a storm with no local address, (2) demands for full payment upfront — standard deposit is 25–30% with the balance due after final inspection, (3) no written, itemized estimate with named materials and brand, (4) verbal "guarantee" instead of a written manufacturer + workmanship warranty, and (5) no proof of $1M+ general liability insurance and workers compensation. Always verify the contractor in your state's online registry and the BBB before signing.
Late winter through early spring (typically February–April) is the cheapest time to schedule a Montana roof replacement. Demand is lowest, crews have open calendars, and contractors often discount 5–15%. Avoid the August–October peak when storm-damage claims spike. Schedule before hail season starts in your area. Emergency repairs are available year-round.
Montana requires a Construction Contractor Registration with the Department of Labor for any work over $2,500.
Given Montana's semi-arid to alpine climate, the most popular choices are standing-seam metal, architectural shingle. Local building practices, hail and wind risk, and snow load all factor in — your assigned local roofing contractor recommends the right system after a free inspection.
snow load is the leading roof issue in Montana, followed by wind uplift and ice damming. Hail damage is a major insurance-claim driver here — Class 4 impact shingles are widely recommended.
Most Montana homeowners get a written, itemized quote within one business hour of submitting our online form. Your assigned roofing professional schedules an in-home inspection within 2–3 business days, and active leaks get same-day emergency tarping in major metros.
Roof-Master matches you with a vetted Montana licensed contractor in your zip within minutes.
