Rhode Island climate

Why Rhode Island roofing is different

Rhode Island roofs face specific climate stressors — humid continental conditions plus nor'easter wind and ice damming — that demand different specs than the state next door. Your assigned roofing contractor calibrates material, ventilation, and underlayment to local code and weather load.

Rhode Island climate metrics affecting roof design
Metric Rhode Island average Implication for your roof
Average annual snowfall 35″ Ice-dam underlayment + ice-and-water shield required at eaves and valleys.
Average annual rainfall 48″ Standard drip-edge + sealed valleys per IRC R905.
Hail risk low Standard architectural shingle systems perform well across Rhode Island.
Hurricane / coastal wind Yes — coastal counties 130 mph wind-rated shingles + ring-shank nails for FORTIFIED Roof eligibility.

"I don't normally gush about businesses, but when I get service and quality like I got with Valley Roofing, I make an exception. There's a bit of a backstory with this roofing project... Last year, in the autumn of 2024, I had someone come by from another roofing company. (I'll leave the name out because they've already been reviewed by me, and it wasn't pretty.) This guy arrived at my house at 6:30pm on a weeknight, and he had a presentation so big it barely fit on our 6-seat dining room table. It was nice, but a bit of overkill. But after 90 minutes...NINETY MINUTES...it was time for this guy to get to a bottom line, and when he did, I simply laughed. He boldly told me that they could do my roof (about a 30 square roof in size) for $69,000. However, if I acted TODAY, that cost would drop to $41,000. I'm a pastor. I have a LOT of people in my home in a given year, and in all my time in ministry, I have NEVER thrown a single person out of my home. However, for this guy, I gladly made an exception. Yet, even in spite of my requests for him to leave ("OK, you can't do $41,000...what can you do?") as it took me threatening to take his stuff and dump it in my trash for him to get the picture...I literally had to pick up one of his display boards and start walking outside with it. This was even after my wife told the guy that she had to put our kids to bed and asked him to leave as well. It was, in a word, an AWFUL experience. Shocked by that drama, we decided to wait through the winter, while I shopped around looking for someone who had decent reviews. That's when I came across Valley. Actually, it was a I previous review from someone up in Ludlow who had a similar experience to mine, and I reached out asking why they went with Valley. When Tom Morin came to my house in the late spring, it was like a breath of fresh air. We chatted about the roof, and I told him what I was looking for. But our conversation was also about life stuff, and I realized that I had found someone who was trying to make an honest living, who loves his family, and his work. It was a positive experience (and he didn't even need a display board! Hahaha!) Even better, the price I got for this work was the price that was quoted, and it was less than HALF of what the other company was scamming me for. What's more, Tom threw me a veteran's discount, which was very appreciated. Yesterday, we had the roof done. The crew that came were some of the hardest workers I've ever seen. They arrived at 7am and stayed all the way to 8:30pm, getting a 30 square roof done in JUST ONE DAY!!! The guys and gals working on the project were kind (there was something of a language barrier, but my minimal knowledge of spanish was helpful!), and the clean-up looks like nobody was even here! Luis, the onsite foreman for the job, made sure that the work was done well and that things moved along throughout the day smoothly. He even came back this morning to check for any remaining things on the property, and brought the magnetic nail pick-up box just to be sure (as it was getting dark about the time they left). This was, from estimate to completion, one of the best experiences I've had with ANY company. Not only was Tom and Luis awesome, but Michelle, Tom's wife, was amazing. Her correspondences were timely (even though mine weren't), she was professional, and she genuinely cared about the experience we were having with them. I'm grateful to her as well! You can go with other roofing companies around here who might do a good job. As far as I'm concerned, however, there's only one company I'm going to use or recommend in the future, and that's Valley Roofing and Restoration."

"Michelle and Tom were a pleasure to work with. So communicative, informative, and professional through all phases of the work. Tom was on site to introduce the work crew and made himself available throughout the day and returned the next morning to make sure all went well. Foreman Louis and the work crew were amazing, hard-working, politie, and careful in their work and clean-up. They were efficient, worked great as a team, and got the job done in no time. I highly recommend Valley Roofing and Restoration."

"Had a great experience with midland roofing. Dennis the owner was right on target with his cost estimates. No surprises. Very reasonable price and quality workmanship. He even did my shed roof to match the house at a small additional fee. Money well spent! The crew was polite and friendly. Materials to do the work were dropped off the day before and the whole job was completed in 1 day and on time. The crew left my property immaculate upon completion of the work. I would highly recommend Dennis and his crew at Midland roofing. Thanks again Dennis!!"

"What a great team! Start with Dennis. Get the story straight from him. "Of course, roofing is our business, so no problem there. The south side of the house. Yup, going to be impossible to repair, but the rest of the house looks pretty good, so not sure you need to spend the extra money for the whole house." Move to Alan and the team. "We'll be there by 7:30am." Job completed, looks amazing. The whole team was respectful, professional, organized and neat. A special word about Mike - the seasoned veteran of Midland. The cedar shingles were all Mike. Meticulous. Thanks Midland!"

"WOW! What a fantastic team and a job well done - I can't recommend Midland Roofing enough. Dennis and his crew were fantastic - arriving on time, giving plenty of information in advance of the plan for the day. They were extremely efficient, friendly and went above and beyond attending to every detail. They were also so kind to my Dad who loved watching the whole process. They cleaned everything up so well and the roof looks great. Pricing was excellent also. So nice to know there are honest, hardworking, friendly experts in this business."

Our Rhode Island vetting methodology

Before any contractor joins our Rhode Island network we pull and verify:

  1. 01 We pull the contractor's active Rhode Island state or municipal roofing license and verify it against the issuing board's online registry.
  2. 02 We require a general liability certificate showing $1,000,000+ per-occurrence coverage.
  3. 03 We require a workers compensation certificate for Rhode Island and every other state the contractor operates in.
  4. 04 We confirm at least one active manufacturer certification — GAF Master Elite, CertainTeed ShingleMaster, or Owens Corning Platinum Preferred.
  5. 05 We pull the BBB profile (minimum rating A-).
  6. 06 We audit public review profiles — Google, BBB, and Angi — for ≥ 4.5★ across ≥ 25 reviews.
  7. 07 Our regional ops manager conducts an in-person Rhode Island crew interview before the contractor takes any leads.

Our regional ops team re-verifies every contractor's documentation every 12 months. We remove any contractor who fails re-verification from the network within 30 days. Network contractors are independent businesses, not employees of RoofPros USA.

Roofing FAQ for Rhode Island homeowners

What is the 25% rule for roofing in Rhode Island?

If more than 25% of your shingles show storm damage, granule loss, lifting, or curling, full replacement usually beats patch repair on lifecycle cost. Rhode Island insurance carriers also use this threshold — once 25% of a roof slope is damaged by a covered peril, most policies pay to replace the entire slope rather than repair it. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) treats 25% as the standard repair-vs-replace inflection point.

What's the average cost of a new roof in Rhode Island?

For a typical 2,000 sq ft (≈22-square) Rhode Island home with architectural shingle, plan on $14,200 including tear-off, decking inspection, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, and a manufacturer-registered warranty. Standing-seam metal runs roughly 2–3× that figure but lasts 40–70 years. Repair-only jobs run $380–$1,800 with $1,100 the average roofing-repair-project spend.

How do I tell if a Rhode Island roofer is dishonest?

Five red flags every Rhode Island homeowner should watch for: (1) door-knockers showing up after a storm with no local address, (2) demands for full payment upfront — standard deposit is 25–30% with the balance due after final inspection, (3) no written, itemized estimate with named materials and brand, (4) verbal "guarantee" instead of a written manufacturer + workmanship warranty, and (5) no proof of $1M+ general liability insurance and workers compensation. Always verify the contractor in your state's online registry and the BBB before signing.

What is the cheapest time of year to get a new roof in Rhode Island?

Late winter through early spring (typically February–April) is the cheapest time to schedule a Rhode Island roof replacement. Demand is lowest, crews have open calendars, and contractors often discount 5–15%. Avoid the August–October peak when storm-damage claims spike. Emergency repairs are available year-round.

Do I need a licensed roofer in Rhode Island?

Rhode Island requires Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board (CRLB) registration for any home improvement work.

What roof material works best in Rhode Island?

Given Rhode Island's humid continental climate, the most popular choices are architectural shingle, slate, standing-seam metal. Local building practices, hail and wind risk, and snow load all factor in — your assigned local roofing contractor recommends the right system after a free inspection.

What's the most common roof problem in Rhode Island?

nor'easter wind is the leading roof issue in Rhode Island, followed by ice damming and salt-air corrosion.

How long does it take to get a quote in Rhode Island?

Most Rhode Island homeowners get a written, itemized quote within one business hour of submitting our online form. Your assigned roofing professional schedules an in-home inspection within 2–3 business days, and active leaks get same-day emergency tarping in major metros.

What is the 25% rule for roofing?

The 25% Rule in roofing serves as a guideline for both homeowners and contractors when planning roofing projects. Basically, it means that if more than 25% of your roof's surface needs repairs, it's often wiser to contemplate a full replacement rather than patchwork.

What is the best time of year to replace shingles?

Fall is considered the best time to schedule a roofing project because it often boasts the best temperature range for roof installation. The weather has cooled off from summer highs, but it hasn't gotten too cold yet.

Is $25,000 a lot for a new roof?

The average cost is around $17,500, with a common range of $11,875 to $25,000. However, the final price depends heavily on your roof's true surface area.
